the official filing period city of minneapolis mayoral candidacy began on july 30 , lasted 2 weeks, until august 13. candidates had until august 15 withdraw , have names taken off of ballot. in march 2013, city council member cam gordon proposed raising fee run mayor $500, move intended discourag[e] frivolous candidates according star tribune. however, fee remained @ $20 2013 filing period. while election officially nonpartisan, there space on affidavits of candidacy candidates declare political party or principle .


a total of 35 people declared candidacy mayor, number minneapolis elections officials claimed hadn t been seen on ballot since @ least 1980s, if not before. hamline university s schultz commented crowded race make difficult candidates name recognition, [e]specially of candidates fall further down on list because don t have lot of money, , aren t going invited debates. article in minnpost suggested majority of candidates campaigns not have lot of funding work, nor organized.


gregg a. iverson first of 6 candidates submit affidavits of candidacy on july 30, first day of filing. meanwhile, 3 candidates waited until august 13, final day of filing period, submit affidavits, including cyd gorman last file. no candidates registered elections department took advantage of ability withdraw candidacies.


in 2014, result of high number of candidates, city voters approved amendment city charter raised filing requirements either $500 or 500 signatures.
