practice , time trials

time trials scheduled 4 days, second day rained out. rain affected practice days well.


giuseppe farina european driver on entry list race, however, did not attempt qualify. farina had difficulty getting car speed, , had experienced handling problems. on may 15, teammate keith andrews stepped car test run, crashed. down frontstretch, andrews began slide, , when attempted correct, car backed inside wall separating pit area. andrews crushed death between cowl , fuel tank, no fire broke out. farina withdrew after andrews killed, no backup car use.


saturday may 18 – pole day time trials

pat o connor qualified pole position. showers delayed qualifying 4 hours, , @ other points during afternoon. total of 9 cars completed runs.


o connor s speed of 143.948 mph not track record. troy ruttman on track, , after lap of on 144 mph, rain forced him abort attempt. able out track, had settle speed of 142.772 mph.


the first rookie make field elmer george, husband of mari hulman george, , son-in-law of speedway president tony hulman.


sunday may 19 – second day time trials

the second day scheduled qualifying rained out.


saturday may 25 – third day time trials

paul russo (144.817 mph) fastest driver of day, in 1 of novi specials. russo fastest qualifier in field, speed faster pole position time previous weekend.


sunday may 26 – fourth day time trials

rain , winds plagued final day of time trials. twenty 3 cars entered day looking fill final 11 positions. total of 43 attempts made, 9 cars bumped.


tony bettenhausen (142.439 mph) fastest driver of day, driving 1 of 500 hp novi specials.


bill cheesbourg needed 2 cars make field. first attempt slow. late in day, got in cliff griffith s car, , @ speed of 141.565 mph, bumped johnnie parsons lineup.
