during civil war, city , immediate surroundings focus of intense military activity. although first battle of independence in august 1862 resulted in confederate states army victory, confederates unable leverage win in significant fashion, kansas city occupied union troops , proved heavily fortified assault. second battle of independence, occurred on october 21–22, 1864 part of sterling price s missouri expedition of 1864, resulted in confederate triumph. once again victory proved hollow, price decisively defeated in pivotal battle of westport next day, ending confederate efforts regain missouri.
general thomas ewing, in response successful raid on nearby lawrence, kansas, led william quantrill, issued general order no. 11, forcing eviction of residents in 4 western missouri counties – including jackson – except living in city , nearby communities , allegiance union certified ewing.
