former college librarian william woodward hid seal dartmouth s officers along charter , 4 account books after state of new hampshire purported take on operation of dartmouth college (and purported make woodward treasurer of dartmouth university). dartmouth college case named woodward defendant , technically sought recover items had hidden. college s success in supreme court returned seal possession , extinguished university.


in 1876, college switched having seal impress wax having impress paper. required second, male die fit under original. seal design carved in sandstone on exterior of rollins chapel in 1886 (see above) , in wood on interior of commons in collis center in 1901 (see right).


on october 28, 1926, trustees affirmed charter s reservation of seal official corporate documents alone. college publications committee under ray nash commissioned typographer w. a. dwiggins create line-drawing version of seal in 1940 saw widespread use.


dwiggins design modified during 1957 change date 1770 1769, accord date of college charter. trustees commissioned new set of dies date of 1769 replace old dies, badly worn after 2 hundred years of use. 1957 design continues used under trademark number 2305032.
