panamá viejo ( old panama ) name used architectural vestiges of monumental historic complex of first spanish city founded on pacific coast of americas pedro arias de avila on august 15, 1519. city starting point expeditions conquered inca empire in peru in 1532. stopover point on 1 of important trade routes in history of american continent, leading famous fairs of nombre de dios , portobelo, of gold , silver spain took americas passed through.

built , settled in 1671 after destruction of panama viejo privateer henry morgan, historic district of panama city (known casco viejo, casco antiguo, or san felipe) conceived walled city protect settlers against future pirate attacks. designated world heritage site unesco in 2003.

before cinta costera 3 project built there protests. of controversy surrounding project involved possibility casco viejo lose world heritage status. on june 28, 2012, unesco decided casco viejo not put on list of world heritage sites in danger.
