almost month before rybak announced intended leave office, dfl city council member betsy hodges of minneapolis thirteenth ward declared run mayor. plans, however, contingent upon whether rybak elect run fourth time. when rybak made announcement in december 2012, hodges formally proclaimed candidacy.
the star tribune reported in december 2012 former dfl city council president jackie cherryhomes considering bid mayor s office. cherryhomes last held office in 2001, remained involved @ minneapolis city hall lobbyist. hodges, intended run if rybak opted not and, hodges, announced run promptly after rybak declared not, on december 27.
dfl city council member gary schiff minneapolis ninth ward mulling mayoral run in mid-december when filed paperwork form committee support potential candidacy. unlike hodges , cherryhomes, schiff stated whether run or not not contingent upon rybak decided do. on january 29, schiff announced seek mayor s seat.
fifth ward city council member don samuels, dfler, considering running office shortly after rybak announced wouldn t run again. samuels had served on city council decade @ time , had run dropped out of race hennepin county commissioner. day after schiff made candidacy official, samuels entered race well, becoming third sitting member of city council so.
mark andrew, formerly hennepin county commissioner , chair of dfl 1995 until 1997, expressed in january interested in potentially vying position of mayor. since leaving public office, andrew had begun greenmark, environmental marketing firm. officially declared candidacy on february 7, 2013, acknowledging late entrance race relative of opponents.
running independent, attorney cam winton mentioned in star tribune article dated march 20, 2013. winton, republican, stated did not intend seek dfl endorsement, making him candidate declared @ time so.
dan cohen, republican former city council member, said on may 28 run mayor if dfl failed agree on endorsement. cohen, sits on minneapolis charter , planning commissions, council member in 1960s last ran mayor in 1969, losing charles stenvig. cohen formally declared candidacy on june 18.
pre-convention debates
the first debate between mayoral candidates took place on march 27 @ university of minnesota s humphrey school of public affairs. moderated professor of political science larry jacobs, of students, debate included andrew, hodges, schiff, cherryhomes, , samuels, noted jacobs being leading dfl candidates . winton observed debate audience not invited participate not seeking dfl endorsement. candidates fielded questions on new vikings stadium (responding anywhere heavily in favor of project staunchly against it), property taxes (no candidate accepted pledge jacobs not raise them), how reviatlize north minneapolis, , qualifications job of mayor.
dfl endorsement convention
an endorsement convention held dfl on june 15, 2013, @ minneapolis convention center. candidates declared exception of winton (andrew, cherryhomes, hodges, samuels, schiff, , thomas) sought nomination , present @ event. sixty percent of delegate votes required receive endorsement.
during first round of voting, jim thomas, cheryhomes, , samuels eliminated each failed secure ten percent of vote required move on second round. schiff eliminated after second ballot, leaving andrew , hodges. andrew came first in every round of voting never reached 60 percent threshold. hodges invited delegates outside of convention center eat pizza. absence meant quorum not present @ convention , so, on fifth ballot, convention ended no endorsement.
