in 13th century, llywelyn, prince of north wales, had palace @ beddgelert. 1 day went hunting without gelert faithful hound unaccountably absent. on llywelyn s return, truant stained , smeared blood, joyfully sprang meet master. prince alarmed hastened find son, , saw infant s cot empty, bedclothes , floor covered blood. frantic father plunged sword hound s side thinking had killed heir. dog s dying yell answered child s cry. llywelyn searched , discovered boy unharmed near lay body of mighty wolf gelert had slain, prince filled remorse said never have smiled again. buried gelert here. spot called beddgelert.
