adult snake mackerels conduct diel vertical migration, staying in deeper water during day , rising surface @ night feed. young , juveniles migrate vertically in opposite direction, staying near surface during day , moving deeper @ night. species feeds on squid, pelagic crustaceans, , bony fishes such lanternfishes, flying fishes, sauries, , mackerel. in turn preyed upon tuna , marlin. reproduction oviparous, females producing 300,000 1,000,000 eggs. spawning occurs year-round; spawning areas known exist in caribbean sea , off coast of florida. males reach sexual maturity @ 43 cm (17 in) long , females @ 50 cm (20 in) long. fish mature , move deeper water there less available light, lose cone cells in eyes in favor of rod cells.
