early career
bernard born in grande prairie, alberta. began curling @ age of eight. in 1988, lost in alberta provincial finals; however, 4 years later win provincial title, earning berth @ 1992 scott tournament of hearts, canada s national curling championship team of allison earl, barb davies , bev kellerman. following year, bernard won provincial mixed title spouse terry meek.
in 1995, bernard lost alberta provincial final, rebounded following year win it, sending 96 hearts, time altered lineup. team of karen ruus, barb sherrington , judy pendergast had 7–4 round robin record. in playoffs, bernard s rink won first game in 1 vs. 2 page playoff match-up against ontario (skipped marilyn bodogh). sent alberta team final, faced bodogh in rematch, lost, 7–4.

cheryl has started own insurance brokerage @ age of 23 , increased demands of building , running successful business, failed make national championship 11 years. in meantime, finalist @ jvc/tsn skins game in 1999, , made provincial finals once again in 2000. canadian women s curling tour champion in 2004. in 2006, lost in first ever women s players championships final against jennifer jones.
2007 2011
bernard won third provincial championship in 2007. @ 2007 scotties tournament of hearts, team of susan o connor, carolyn darbyshire , cori bartel finished 6–5 record, tying them prince edward island , ontario. bernard s team beat ontario in first tie breaker, unable beat p.e.i. s suzanne gaudet (birt) whom lost 5–4. in 2008, bernard s team played in first grand slam of curling final, losing 2008 trail appliances curling classic shannon kleibrink s rink. in 2009, bernard won fourth alberta title , represented province @ 2009 scotties tournament of hearts team finished 6–5 record. however, keep them out of playoffs.
the bernard team s success during period qualified them 2009 canadian olympic curling trials. 1 of 4 teams directly earn spot @ event nicknamed roar of rings . @ roar , bernard s rink went undefeated, having lost final round robin game stefanie lawton. 6–1 record earned them direct spot in final, won. defeated shannon kleibrink in final score of 7–6. game came down final shot, bernard had draw full eight-foot win.
bernard s team won silver medal @ 2010 olympic winter games in vancouver, british columbia. after completing round robin in first place 1 loss china, bernard won silver medal, losing sweden (skipped anette norberg) in end, 7–6.
bernard wrapped 2009–10 curling season winning 2010 players championships, first grand slam victory in career , named 2010 mvp peers during event.
despite going 2010 winter olympics, bernard rink began 2010–11 curling season without corporate sponsor. response of team put billboards around calgary advertising need one. within month dairy queen announced main corporate sponsor. in december 2010, team lost stefanie lawton s rink 7–3 in 2010 canada cup of curling.
following losing semi-final of 2011 alberta scotties tournament of hearts, on february 8, 2011, team bernard announced disband team. had been team agreement @ beginning of 2011.
2011–2014
cheryl bernard announced new curling team 2011–12 season consist of longtime third susan o connor, lori olson-johns played crystal webster, , cathy king, , 3 time junior champion jennifer sadleir. due sports canada funding bernard team received olympic appearance, 4 members have play 2011–2012, leave cori morris , carolyn mcrorie having join, or form new team. mcrorie alternate bernard team when appropriate.
although bernard did not participate @ 2012 scotties tournament of hearts, awarded joan mead builder’s award. award given in curling community contributes growth , development of women s curling in canada. rink failed qualify playoffs @ 2012 alberta scotties tournament of hearts.
bernard s rink not return provincials in 2013, rink lost lisa eyamie in c final of alberta southern qualifier.
retirement
bernard announced retirement competitive curling in june 2014.
after retiring competitive curling bernard has dedicated time give communities supported through olympic journey. in october 2014, goodwill industries of alberta announced olympic medalist cheryl bernard become ambassador , goodwillian . bernard decided join goodwill after touring operations in calgary. learned goodwill’s power of work program, provides individuals disabilities opportunity enhance lives through meaningful employment.[9].
