Final stages Great Tea Race of 1866



ariel sighted bishop light @ 1:30 on 5 september 1866. possible sail set, sped toward mouth of english channel. @ daybreak, ship seen on starboard quarter, carrying every stitch of canvas could. captain keay of ariel later said instinct told me taeping - , right. strong west-southwesterly wind carried these 2 ships channel @ 14 knots. lizard abeam @ 8:00 , start point @ noon. 2 ships off portland towards 6:00 pm , st. catherine s point due north @ 7:25 pm. beachy head abeam after midnight. relative positions of 2 ships barely shifted while - ariel kept lead.


at 3:00 on 6th, ariel approaching dungeness, started signalling pilot. @ 4:00 hove , continued signal flares , rockets. taeping, signalling pilot, coming fast , close astern of ariel @ 5:00 am. there no sign taeping heave to, captain keay ordered ariel s sails filled keep ahead of other ship, sure of getting first pilot. on taeping captain mackinnon conceded , hove to.


at 5:55 pilot arrived on board ariel. saluted captain keay congratulations @ being first ship china season. got reply yes, , westward? have not room boast yet. @ 6:00 both ships under way, heading south foreland. despite taeping resorting setting stunsails, ariel mile ahead. both ships signalled tug. here luck taeping, better tug put towline aboard her, took lead towed round coastline of kent , thames.


taeping arrived @ gravesend 55 minutes before ariel, gave no advantage both ships had wait tide rise sufficiently. ariel had shorter distance go - arriving outside east india dock gates @ 9:00 pm, tide still low gates open. taeping carried on up-river london docks. here, unlike entrance east india dock, there inner , outer set of gates. taeping s shallower draft allowed through outer gates, topped lock dock basin. passed through @ 9:47 pm. ariel entered east india dock @ 10:15 pm.


while ariel , taeping racing english coast of channel, serica had been speeding along french side. passed through downs @ noon , managed, @ 11:30 pm, west india dock before lock gates shut.


this meant these 3 ships had left china on same tide, sailed on 14,000 miles in race lasting 99 days, docked in london on same tide, less 2 hours between them.


fiery cross not far behind first 3 - sighted isle of wight @ 10:00 on 7 september but, on arriving in downs, compelled anchor because wind had risen gale force. docked in london @ 8:00 on 8 september. taitsing arrived on morning of 9 september.
