richards selected dallas cowboys in fourth round (97th overall) of 1991 nfl draft, after dropped because of poor junior year. team s second leading rusher in preseason , had cowboys longest run (a 32-yarder). made team backup future hall of fame running emmitt smith, placed on injured reserve list after second game of season.
during last game of 1992 regular season, when cowboys playing chicago bears, team rested of regular players in fourth quarter (including smith), prepare upcoming playoffs. richards saw extensive playing time , scored touchdown, committed 2 costly fumbles in 27-14 win. next day, cowboys coach jimmy johnson released him, citing fact not tolerate running fumbling problem going playoffs, though not able replace roster spot signing new player, have pay him in full of remaining games , have give him super bowl ring. thus, richards missed entire 1992 postseason, including cowboys 52-17 win on buffalo bills in super bowl xxvii.

in 1993, signed free agent detroit lions. released on august 30 , recalled off waivers next day. cut on september 7, after playing in 1 game.
