service history

the submarine laid down on 9 august 1941 @ flensburger schiffsbau yard @ flensburg yard number 479, launched on 28 july 1942 , commissioned on 12 november under command of oberleutnant zur see hans-jügen bühring.


she served 5th u-boat flotilla 12 november 1942 , 13th flotilla 1 july 1943.


1st patrol

the boat s first patrol preceded trips kiel in germany bergen , narvik in norway, departed on 16 august 1943. sailed southwest of svalbard , west of bear island. docked in hammerfest on 24 september.


2nd , 3rd patrols

her second foray repeat of first - finishing in narvik on 19 november 1943.


the submarine s third patrol took around bear island.


4th patrol

sortie number 4 saw boat damaging hms obdurate southeast of bear island on 25 january 1944. damaged fort bellingham next day. ship subsequently sunk u-957.


5th patrol , loss

having moved hammerfest trondheim, u-360 started fifth patrol on 29 march 1944. on 2 april, sunk southwest of bear island depth charges british destroyer hms keppel.


51 men died in u-boat; there no survivors.
