during fighting crews , pilots rotated between these 2 bases. squadron relieved on february 18, 1943 rejoined fighting in april 1943. during time on guadalcanal, vmsb-131 scored 14 sure hits , 6 probables torpedoes against japanese shipping. scored 6 direct hits against ships bombs. came @ cost of 8 pilots , 17 radiomen , gunners killed in action. efforts 6 pilots awarded distinguished flying cross heroism. squadron left combat zone , returned marine corps air station el toro in june 1943 , redesignated marine torpedo bombing squadron 131 vmtb-131.


after year of rest, refitting, , training, vmtb-131 again deployed pacific theater on march 29, 1944 time on board uss petrof bay. arrived in guam in august 1944 , flew anti-submarine patrols next 8 months. on april 27, 1945 squadron attached marine aircraft group 22 (mag-22) , departed okinawa. during battle of okinawa based out of ie shima, island northwest of okinawa, , continued fly anti-submarine patrols , provided close air support american ground forces. on july 25, 1945 transferred under command of marine aircraft group 14 (mag-14) , went ashore based out of okinawa remained until end of war. squadron returned west coast , deactivated on november 16, 1945.
