career
early career , semantics (1986–1998)

prior developing own band , solo work, added band of judson spence, appeared in various of videos on mtv, , part of spence s groundbreaking nashville showcases landed him 14 label offers. nashville music executive scott siman encouraged owsley pursue own writing , performing, why declined offer amy grant in late 1980s become guitarist.

together millard powers, founded power pop band semantics, included jody spence , ringo starr s son, zak starkey. signed geffen records john kalodner. band recorded album entitled powerbill in 1993, never released in u.s being pop alternative , alternative pop. got distributed in japan in 1996. fine-tuning album under tutelage of producer , manager peter asher 4 years taught him production process , management. being dropped label left band members destitute , broke.

amy grant turned out have heard tapes of semantics , contacted owsley in 1994 let him know how liked it, , ask him join her guitarist on house of love tour. owsley subsequently hold position of tour guitarist 16 years, until death. later co-write , record various songs her. through work producer mutt lange, owsley introduced shania twain. on years, tour guitarist , harmony singer, appearances on many national television shows , awards programs. owsley went on work many mainstream , christian artists, in country genre. during 1990s, among others worked vince gill, michael w. smith, chris rodriguez, dc talk (for whom produced), neville brothers, vanessa l. williams, , wynonna.

with money earned working amy grant , shania twain, bought house in green hills, tennessee , in built home recording studio. in 1998, led release of self-titled solo album distributed not lame recordings. co-produced millard powers , jeff balding. doug morris of universal music group picked , proposed album rerecorded, owsley insisted needed remixed either tom lord-alge, bob clearmountain or andy wallace. tom lord-alge signed on, j.r. mcneely. eponymous album owsley got re-released on march 23, 1999 under giant records.

many of songs on album anniston, alabama, born , lived until 21, , longing town. first single off album being coming roses , owsley sent entire staff of giant red rose , valentine s day card, expressing hopes things coming roses all. single didn t catch on, m alright later did score minor hit. recorded entirely on vintage studer a-80 (2-inch, 16-track of 1 defective) tape machine in home studio on hobbs road in nashville, tennessee, garnered him grammy award nomination best engineered album. album labeled 1 of best pop records of 1990s. during ensuing tour, among others joined pat mcgee band , fountains of wayne, bassist adam schlesinger owsley has recorded in later years.

the hard way (2004)

owsley released second album, hard way, on indie record label lakeview entertainment on february 24, 2004, 5 years after first solo album. ready in 2003, got delayed in part due legal difficulties former label, giant records. album had heavier , more mature sound compared debut. chosen single, despite rotation on triple-a radio stations, never reached greater audience. album recorded on span of 3 years, using variety of recording formats, in new home studio in franklin, tennessee , number of studios in tennessee. owsley played multiple roles on it, including of producer. entirely mixed paul david hager, , dedicated owsley s maternal grandmother, late alys o. boozer. cover of paul mccartney s band on run , owsley recorded 2001 tribute album, included hidden track.

psycho / upside down (2005)

in 2004, entered agreement ume digital, new label in universal music group, , first major label distribute music through digital downloads. led release of combined single psycho / upside down in 2005. same year, owsley contributed cover song got lot on head substitution mass confusion, tribute album in honor of cars.

in 2000s (decade), owsley continued work session guitarist, (backing) vocalist, mandolin player , less bassist , keyboardist. among others recorded faith hill, michael mcdonald, charlotte church, jump5, natalie grant, david phelps, james ingram, rodney crowell, mercyme, katinas, nate sallie, graham colton, , kenny loggins. producer john fields arranged owsley various disney stars, such miley cyrus, selena gomez, demi lovato, jonas brothers, , luke benward.

besides being musician, owsley continued producing , engineering. co-produced kevin max s 2007 album blood , toured him. played various instruments on chris sligh s 2008 album running , produced several songs on it. in last 2 years of life, owsley worked session guitarist andy sturmer s movie soundtracks. in 2009, owsley made version of when lonely comes around (grant/owsley), sung , recorded himself, available fans free. in 2009, owsley co-produced , played on popfilter boston s debut release pop this.
