in roman times farmsteads existed on site of barry castle , biglis , there verbal reports of discovery of cemetery including lead coffins scallop-shell decoration. both st. baruc s chapel , st. nicholas church have re-used roman bricks , tiles incorpoarated in building fabric , roman villa discovered in llandough. in 1980 roman building consisting of 22 rooms , cellars in 4 ranges around central courtyard excavated @ glan-y-môr , believed third-century building associated naval activity, maybe supply depot.
the vikings launched raids in area , barry island known raider base in 1087. flat holm , steep holm islands in bristol channel have name holm name derived scandinavian word island in estuary. excavation of glan-y-môr site revealed site had been reused in 6th , 7th century , between ad 830 , 950 dry stone sub-rectangular building turf or thatched roof.
