the raiders defeated jets in high scoring shootout, outgaining them in total yards 502 410, , holding them off in wild, 36-point fourth quarter. quarterback rich gannon completed 23 of 29 passes 294 yards , 2 touchdowns. 39-year-old wide receiver jerry rice had superb performance, catching 9 passes 183 yards , touchdown. 9 receptions tied franchise playoff record held cliff branch , fred biletnikoff. running charlie garner ran 80 yards touchdown clinch game 1:27 remaining. finished game 156 rushing yards on 15 carries, along 3 receptions 26 yards. jets quarterback vinny testaverde threw 277 yards , 3 touchdowns. running curtis martin added 106 rushing yards, while receiver laveranues coles caught 8 passes 123 yards.


following missed field goal jets kicker john hall on opening drive, oakland kicker sebastian janikowski made 2 field goals give team 6–0 first quarter lead. in second quarter, hall , janikowski both made field goals before oakland scored first touchdown of game on 66-yard drive ended tim brown s 2-yard touchdown reception make score 16–3 22 seconds left in half.


early in third quarter, testaverde narrowed score 16–10 17-yard touchdown pass wayne chrebet. later in quarter, raiders defensive johnnie harris stripped ball fullback richie anderson , lineman grady jackson recovered ball oakland on own 45-yard line. after short run garner, gannon s 47-yard completion rice moved ball jets 4-yard line. few plays later, fullback zack crockett scored 2-yard touchdown run on first play of fourth quarter, giving raiders 24–10 lead. instead of putting game away, crockett s score set off wild scoring explosion both teams, ended combining 36 points in final quarter testaverde desperately tried rally team back.


the jets responded driving 64 yards in 10 plays , scoring testaverde s 4-yard touchdown pass anderson. oakland stormed 68-yard, 7 play scoring drive. after 21-yard completion rice , 20-yard strike jerry porter on third down , 8, gannon threw 21-yard touchdown pass rice 5:53 left in regulation. testaverde once again responded, completing four-yard touchdown pass chrebet on fourth down , goal make 31–24 1:57 left. because jets had 2 timeouts left, coach herm edwards decided not attempt onside kick. new york s defense managed stuff running tyrone wheatley on 2 straight plays, on third down, garner took off down right sideline 80-yard touchdown run, longest in raiders postseason history.
