longwood’s first conservatory built in 1914 when pierre s. du pont added l-shaped extension original peirce farmhouse, doubling size. conservatory connected old , new wings.
longwood s second , largest conservatory, opened in 1921, 1 of world s great greenhouse structures. conservatory alone home 4,600 types of plants , trees. since original construction began in 1919, has undergone expansions , renovations. on palm sunday in 1966, palm house opened. space designed victorine , samuel homsey, inc. in 1989, new silver garden opened. garden designed isabelle greene, , meant evoke feeling of dry desert stream bed.
in 1988, roberto burle marx asked redesign former desert house in conservatory. brazilian burle marx 1 of celebrated landscape designers of 20th century, , had visited , lectured @ longwood several times. new garden named cascade garden , opened in june 1992.
in 1993, 100-foot-long mediterranean garden opened in conservatory, designed ron lutsko, jr.
in january 2003, east conservatory closed renovation , redesign, main hall reopening public on october 29, 2005.
in 2007, larger indoor children’s garden opened in conservatory, replacing small children’s garden had been housed in conservatory since 1980s. in 2010, indoor green wall, designed british landscape architect kim wilkie added conservatory. green wall contains 47,000 plants , largest green wall in north america when opened. green wall, entrance way series of bathrooms, voted america’s best restroom in 2014
