History Historic Michigan Boulevard District










michigan avenue named after lake michigan, once ran alongside @ 100 east in city s street numbering system until land reclamation grant park (then lake park) pushed shoreline east. one-sided street feature due in large part legal battles of aaron montgomery ward city on cleaning park , removing of structures in it. ward opposed development of grant park public buildings along lakefront except art institute of chicago building. eventually, ward s ideas adopted daniel burnham in plan of chicago, called insured light, air, , agreeable outlook along grant park street frontage. preservation of lakefront view has inspired architects create architectural cornucopia of designs along streetwall .


at no point michigan avenue called michigan boulevard, prior great chicago fire of 1871, street officially known michigan boulevard , referred boul mich . 1920s, north michigan avenue (especially magnificent mile) referred upper boul mich . paris boulevard saint-michel original boul mich.

the district has changed on years various architectural designs have evolved compliment it. boulevard widened between 1909 , 1910 causing art institute of chicago building have move lions guarding entrance 12 feet. @ time, jackson boulevard , michigan avenue intersection (the end of route 66) known route center . @ time, boulevard had no streets crossing , extending eastward, , thus, jackson intersection t intersection. still true in 1920 when michigan avenue bridge opened , increased traffic connecting boulevard magnificent mile , community north of chicago river quarter mile north of district. fountain of great lakes (installed in 1913) highly visible route center. today, 4 streets cross michigan avenue within district (in addition northern , southern endpoints @ crossing streets). 3 of 4 change names cross michigan: eastbound east monroe street (100 south) becomes east monroe drive; eastbound east jackson boulevard (300 south) becomes east jackson drive; , two-way east congress parkway (500 south) becomes east congress drive crosses grant park east. east balbo drive (700 south) not change names crosses michigan.
