following acts of union 1707, fashion arose, particularly in scotland, referring scotland , england north britain , south britain respectively. these terms gained in popularity during 19th century. lasting example of usage in name of north british railway, became part of london , north eastern railway in 1923, , in name of north british hotel, built railway in edinburgh in 1902, retained name until reopened in 1991 balmoral hotel.
