the county formed in 1838 southern part of buncombe county. named leonard henderson, chief justice of north carolina supreme court 1829 1833. there no evidence henderson ever passed through area.


in 1855 parts of henderson county , rutherford county combined form polk county, , in 1861 parts of henderson county , jackson county combined form transylvania county.


henderson county, in 1861 encompassed present-day transylvania county well, contributed 1,296 soldiers confederate states army out of approximately 10,000 population, 130 union troops. (figures terrell t. garren s mountain myth: unionism in western north carolina, published 2006).


henderson county government centered around hendersonville in 1905 county courthouse on main street, until structure replaced new courthouse (c. 1995) on grove street in hendersonville.


the first rail line reached hendersonville in 1879, ushering in new era of access outside world. however, parts of county had long been known retreats, including little charleston of flat rock in south carolina s low country planter families had maintained second homes since 19th century.


a major land boom ensued in 1920s, culminating in crash of 1929, severely deflated prices , left structures such fleetwood hotel atop jumpoff mountain incomplete. population growth in county has been rapid since 1960s result of influx other states, many new housing developments changing face of rural areas of county.


other notable historic sites in henderson county include: woodfield inn (1852), connemara—final home of carl sandburg (originally known rock hill, home of csa secretary of treasury christopher memminger) -- , st. john in wilderness episcopal church. today, flat rock site of main campus of blue ridge community college.
