beginning in 1962, hooker gained greater exposure when toured europe in annual american folk blues festival. dimples became successful single on uk singles charts in 1964, 8 years after first release. hooker began perform , record rock musicians. 1 of earliest collaborations british blues rock band groundhogs. in 1970, recorded joint album hooker n heat, american blues , boogie rock group canned heat, repertoire included adaptations of hooker songs. became first of hooker s albums reach billboard charts, peaking @ number 78 on billboard 200. other collaboration albums followed, including endless boogie (1971) , never out of these blues alive (1972), included steve miller, elvin bishop, van morrison, , others.
hooker appeared in 1980 film blues brothers. performed boom boom in role of street musician. in 1989, recorded album healer carlos santana, bonnie raitt, , others. 1990s saw additional collaboration albums: mr. lucky (1991), chill out (1995), , don t (1997) morrison, santana, los lobos, , additional guest musicians. re-recording of boom boom (the title track 1992 album) guitarist jimmie vaughan became hooker s highest charting single (number 16) in uk. come see me, 2004 dvd, includes performances filmed between 1960 , 1994 , interviews several of musicians.
hooker died in sleep on june 21, 2001, in los altos, california. interred @ chapel of chimes in oakland, california. survived 8 children, 19 grandchildren, , numerous great-grandchildren.
