from 1536 act of union, glamorgan represented in parliament 1 member, elected freeholders in county. in 1885, constituency split 3 creation of east glamorganshire, mid glamorganshire , south glamorganshire. representation of people act 1918 created llandaff , barry constituency. sir william cope (conservative) won 1918 general election. labour regained seat @ 1929 general election when charles ellis lloyd returned 2 years later lost seat conservatives patrick munro.

after munro s death in 1942 cyril lakin won by-election conservatives. arwyn lynn ungoed-thomas (labour) won seat @ 1945 general election. llandaff , barry constituency abolished representation of people act 1948. , replaced barry parliamentary constituency. seat first contested in united kingdom general election, 1950 when dorothy rees (labour) elected. lost seat sir herbert raymond gower (conservative) @ 1951 general election. held seat until abolition in 1983.


it replaced vale of glamorgan constituency sir herbert raymond gower (conservative) won @ 1983 general election. remained mp until death in 1989. @ subsequent by-election seat won john smith (labour). @ 1992 general election walter sweeney (conservative) won 19 votes. made marginal seat in britain. john smith won @ 1997 general election. in 2010 general election there 6.1% swing labour conservative. has handed seat alun cairns (conservative) mp.

barry part of vale of glamorgan assembly constituency , part of south wales central assembly region. jane hutt has been vale of glamorgan assembly member since inception of welsh assembly.


local councils

barry incorporated municipal borough royal charter in september 1939. borough successor barry , cadoxton local board (1888–1894) , barry urban district council (1894–1939). area covered borough comprised barry, cadoxton-juxta-barry, merthyr dyfan , parts of penmark, porthkerry , sully. in 1974, abolished , functions taken on vale of glamorgan district council , south glamorgan county council.


the local council, barry town council, largest town council in wales. has given olympic silver medalist david davies freedom of town, first freedom granted since 1958. mayor since may 2017 nic hodges represents baruc ward , plaid cymru councillor, barry s first plaid cymru mayor. town council has no overall control labour, plaid cymru , conservative councillors


the local unitary authority, created in 1995, vale of glamorgan council has administrative headquarters in barry. there 23 wards electing 47 councillors, including 8 wards in barry (electing 18 county councillors) comprise baruc (2 councillors), buttrills (2), cadoc (3), castleland (2), court (2), gibbonsdown (2), dyfan (2) , illtyd (3).
