the university hospital has origins in 2 older hospitals: 1 founded in 1302 , older university, other 1 founded faculty of medicine in 1708. these merged in 1850.


the earliest hospital in uppsala founded in 1302. used 400 years until great fire of 1702, destroyed large parts of central uppsala. new hospital, later became uppsala county hospital, built in place, moved out of town in 1811.


the university hospital such founded in 1708 first clinic specific intention of facilitating practical education of medical students. known nosocomium academicum, located in oxenstierna palace @ riddartorget, beside cathedral (see illustration). building (the former residence of president of royal chancellery bengt gabrielsson oxenstierna) today houses uppsala university faculty of law.


the present akademiska sjukhuset established in 1850 organizational merger of county hospital , university clinic, , new building inaugurated in 1867 on hill below uppsala castle southeast. building, still in use, present hospital complex has grown.


in 1663 medical professor , amateur architect olaus rudbeck designed anatomical theatre located in gustavianum, @ time served main building of uppsala university. rudbeck had spent time @ leiden university, , both anatomical theatre , uppsala university botanical garden founded in uppsala in 1655 influenced experiences. today gustavianum still in use lectures , conferences, , hosts museum, museum gustavianum, open visitors.
