he son of portrait , history painter gerhard von kügelgen. home grew in dresden kügelgenhaus museum. attended gymnasium in bernburg (saale) , studied @ dresden academy of fine arts. when eighteen, father murdered during robbery, creating emotional crisis challenged religious beliefs. 1825 1826, lived in rome, became friends fellow painter ludwig richter. @ time began suffer progressive colorblindness.


in 1827, married julie krummacher (1804-1909), daughter of friedrich adolf krummacher, evangelical theologian. had 6 children. in 1833, became court painter @ anhalt-bernburg summer residence in ballenstedt , remained there rest of life. 1853 1863, served personal chamberlain duke alexander karl, suffering severe mental illness. during these years, increasingly turned painting writing.


in 1870, memoirs published philipp von nathusius. given title jugenderinnerungen eines alten mannes (childhood memories of old man). these stories youth became popular reading german middle-class. 230th edition appeared in 1922. english translation made under title bygone days: or, old man s reminiscences of youth. several editions in german , english available reprints.


since 1993, kunstkreis sachsen-anhalt in bernburg has awarded annual wilhelm von kügelgen scholarship art students.
