the battle of leyte invasion , conquest of leyte in philippines american , filipino guerrilla forces under command of macarthur. u.s. forces fought japanese army forces led general tomoyuki yamashita. battle took place 17 october 31 december 1944 , launched philippines campaign of 1944–45, goal of recapture , liberate entire philippine archipelago , end 3 years of japanese occupation. 32nd in reserve , not deployed leyte until 14 november when assigned x corps. relieved 24th infantry division , went action along pinamopoan-ormoc highway, taking limon , smashing yamashita line in bitter hand-to-hand combat. division linked elements of u.s. 1st cavalry division in vicinity of lonoy, on 22 december, marking collapse of japanese resistance in upper oromoc valley. division remained on front lines until japanese resistance on leyte broken near end of december.
