the new turret used larger ordnance qf 20 pounder gun. mounted co-axial 0.30 in m1919 browning machine gun. smoke grenade dischargers fitted both sides of turret. flap turret rear allowed spent shell casings gun ejected vehicle.


hulls based on later cromwell vii standard, modified comet model b style fishtail exhausts , no hull-mounted machine gun. hulls reworked type f standard, , fire extinguisher pulls re-routed 2 track-side bins. large armoured telephone box fitted vehicle rear communication infantry.


additional defensive armour welded cromwell hull in keeping cromwell vii standard, turret upgrade focused on offensive capability. weight limitations on suspension prevented use of heavier armour on turret, , whilst sloped provide additional protection, new turret used thinner material (20–30 mm).


the turret ring increased in size accommodate larger gun, size limitation of cromwell hull meant new turret need larger , taller around it. gave vehicle higher profile.


even size increase, stowage larger ammunition rounds severely limited. hull machine gunner s position removed provide additional stowage space ammunition, vehicle still carried 25 rounds. conventional high explosive (he) shells carried, primary ammunition armour-piercing discarding sabot projectiles (apds)


a mixed collection of cromwells upgraded, resulting in number of variations in design based on vehicle s previous format.
