after war, finished medical studies @ jagiellonian university in kraków. in 1947, słonimski emigrated , settled in france, members of armia krajowa prosecuted newly established communist government in poland. once in paris, joined group of boris ephrussi , started working in field of genetics. in 1952 obtained ph.d.


between 1971 , 1991, słonimski director of centre de génétique moléculaire of french cnrs in gif-sur-yvette.


słonimski never broke contacts home country, poland. since 1980, heading solidarité france-pologne, organizing aid poland. hosted polish intelectualists , dissidents, such adam michnik, tadeusz mazowiecki, maria , leszek kołakowski. when martial law introduced in poland in 1981, organized financial support scientists repressed government. money smuggled , distributed in poland 2 polish couriers: wacław gajewski, professor of genetics, , władysław kunicki-goldfinger, professor of microbiology. słonimski gave them code names eukaryote , prokaryote , gajewski working on fungi, , kunicki-goldfinger microbiologist.
