the final major facelift gt6 came in 1970 in form of mk iii. time entire bodyshell revised match changes made spitfire mk iv: modifications included cut-off rear end, recessed door handles , smoother front end. detail changes made mechanics, in 1973 – close end of car s production life – rear suspension changed again, time cheaper (but still effective) swing-spring layout fitted spitfire mk iv. modification of swing axle rear suspension used on herald-derived models, transverse leaf spring mounted on pivot, eliminating roll stiffness @ rear, , reducing jacking effect under cornering loads. compensate loss of roll stiffness, larger front anti-roll bar fitted. brake servo added in 1973, , seats changed vinyl cloth. there still comprehensive options list, knock-on wire wheels no longer available. unladen weight increased 2,030 lb (920 kg).
engine power , torque mk iii similar mk ii, better aerodynamics led new top speed of 112 mph (180 km/h) , 0–60 mph time of 10.1 seconds. performance comfortably ahead of mgb gt, reached 105 mph (169 km/h) , 60 mph in approximately 13 seconds. fuel economy improved 28 mpg‑imp (10 l/100 km; 23 mpg‑us). last usa models relatively performed poorly owing compression ratios being reduced allow use of lower octane unleaded gasoline.
the mk iii never sold in numbers hoped triumph, , comprehensively beaten in marketplace mgb. triumph refused release official convertible version of gt6 and, after poor sales, dropped triumph range @ end of 1973, although few cars sold following year.
