history
foundation (1952–1990)
the club founded in 1952 under name al-tahrir , making them second oldest team in qatar. in 1957, club merged al-wehda, club founded founded on year led mohamed ali ahmed al-ansari, after playing friendly. merged under name of al-wehda. al-wehda did not play out qatar or host foreign clubs due lack of financial possibilities club. in 1972, club integrated under current name, al arabi. first president of club ahmed ali ahmed al-ansari.
al-arabi known having 1 of largest fan bases in of qatar, other gulf states, , well-known overseas. popularity outside of middle east bolstered achievements , national team players, until 2003 when reached peak signing of argentine legend gabriel batistuta.
it came in 14th place in international federation of football history & statistics s 1901–2000 asian club of century, highest qatar.

golden era (1990–2000)
the 1990s marked start of continuous chain of succession al-arabi. dream team had come fruition likes of marco antônio , richard owebukeri top scorers in league @ 1 point. perhaps significant player mubarak mustafa, still considered 1 of best qatari footballers in history. team, impressing many versatile squad, took qatari league storm, winning 5 times out of 10. not satisfied merely local success, team achieved runners-up position in afc champions league in 1995.
they won first heir apparent cup in 1997.
decline (2000–2011)
the new century saw significant slump in al-arabi s performance. factors impacted may include departure of mubarak mustafa , increase of competitiveness local clubs. in 2002 season, al arabi finished in 7th place, lowest position since debut in qatar stars league.
the arrival of gabriel batistuta in 2003 saw glimpse of hope al-arabi finished higher in league last 2 previous seasons, ended finished 9th in league @ end of 2007 season, new low. did not win single domestic title during period, , had limited success in international competitions. furthermore, suffered largest-ever defeat against al sadd season when beaten 7–0, resulted in sacking of coach cabralzinho.

management crisis (2011–present)
the beginning of 2011–12 season looked bright al arabi, club winning first domestic silverware in 13 years defeating umm salal sc in final of 2011 sheikh jassem cup. however, string of bad results in league resulted in sacking of coach, paulo silas.
they eligible play in 2012 afc champions league, first team eliminated from. during period, club had been in charge of 3 coaches in span of 3 months. infamously made history being first team since 2007 lose every match in group stage, first qatari team achieve this. result, club s director of football, mubarak mustafa, announced departure club. furthermore, dr. abdullah al-mal, president of club, announced retirement sports. replaced hitme bin ali al hitmi. fiscal budget of club reduced 15 million riyals 9 million riyals.
