pre-war
after opening in 1929, lions joined southern league (1929-1931), winning in 1930 , 1931. 1932 season saw them join national league won @ first attempt. lions continued compete in national league until outbreak of world war ii .
1946-1957
after war wembley continued in national league, winning title in opening season in 1946. following season retained title. lions operated until end of 1956 season, winning title further 5 times (successive titles between 1949 , 1953) in 1957 withdrew league before season started due death of sir arthur elvin, chairman of wembley stadium. many of wembley home meetings in 1948 staged @ wimbledon empire stadium used 1948 summer olympics.
1970-1971
in 1970, wembley speedway returned, entering british league. promoters trevor redmond , bernard cottrell bought licence , contracts of of riders edinburgh monarchs promoter ian hoskins operating @ coatbridge. lions managed stay in operation 2 seasons due stadium not being able support speedway @ times due commitments other events being held there.
