1850 & 1866 gnr engine sheds
a 2 road dead ended shed established great northern railway (gnr) in 1850, on east side of station. shed closed in 1866 when nearby wood green shed had been built, , later demolished; making way expansion of hornsey station.
in 1866 2 road dead ended shed established ( wood green shed ), ~1 km north of station on west side of track adjacent new water works, , west of wood green common. shed closed in 1899.
1899 gnr 8 road engine shed
in 1899 8 track shed constructed east of hornsey station, 52 ft (16 m) turntable, coal stage , water tank; shed connected via ferme park sidings. shed provided locos shunting in yard , nearby ferme park sidings, goods workings across london south via snow hill tunnel. hornsey locos shared suburban duties on southern end of gnr locos kings cross top shed.
under british railways facility received shed code 34b. depot s initial allocation gnr class n1s, gnr class n2s , gnr class j13s.
with passing of steam, in 1961 shed converted use diesel traction, , continued in use until 1970s, closing in may 1971. shed s duties passed nearby finsbury park diesel depot.
in 1973 shed converted use overhead line (ohl) maintenance depot, part of works great northern electrification.
1973 great northern electrification emu depot
in 1970s site extensively rebuilt; part of ferme park sidings south of shed cleared, , new electric multiple unit depot constructed; work done part of great northern electrification; new maintenance shed constructed 6 roads, each capable of holding 8 car train. @ same time old loco shed converted use overhead line (ohl) maintenance depot, stabling ohl repair train.
after 1973 depot code became he.
in 2008 first capital connect opened driver training academy @ depot in 2008, equipped british rail class 319 , class 365 driving simulators. simulators became operational in 2009.
thameslink class 700 maintenance depot
in 2009 network rail initiated plans build new emu depot @ hornsey, part of thameslink programme. after consultations, revised plans smaller depot submitted in 2011. depot expected open in 2016.
