in 1245, innocent iv issued bulls , sent envoy in person of giovanni da pian del carpine (accompanied benedict pole) emperor of tartars . message asked mongol ruler become christian , stop aggression against europe. khan güyük replied in 1246 in letter written in persian still preserved in vatican library, demanding submission of pope , other rulers of europe.
