curriculum

the presbyterian ladies college comprehensive school traditional academic approach designed prepare students attending university. school registered , accredited new south wales board of studies, , therefore follows mandated curriculum years.

students in stages 1 3 (kindergarten year 6) study 6 key learning areas: english, mathematics, history/geography, science , technology, creative arts, personal development, health , physical education (pd/h/pe). youngest students follow reggio emilia approach education. specialist extension courses offered select students year 2 6 gifts , talents in special areas (spec).

subjects offered stage 4 students (years 7 , 8) include: english, mathematics, science, geography, history, french, mandarin, latin, japanese, german, italian, design , technology, visual arts, music, pdhpe, computing , religious education. excelsior class enrichment programme offered gifted students in stage , includes additional classes such philosophy , olympiad activities.

in stage 5 (years 9 , 10), students prepared school certificate , study programme comprises 2 elective classes , religious education, courses mandated board of studies. compulsory core subjects are: english, mathematics, science, australian history , geography, , pdhpe. electives chosen from: elective history, elective geography, french, german, mandarin, latin, japanese, italian, commerce, drama, design , technology, textiles , design, music, visual arts, , physical activity , sports science. in year 10, excelsior class begins study of 1–unit higher school certificate (hsc) course in studies of religion.


in final school stage (years 11 , 12) students prepared new south wales hsc. curriculum @ stage has clear university orientation. board of studies requires stage 6 students study minimum of 12 units in preliminary year , 10 units in hsc year (most subjects being worth 2 units). hsc english compulsory; standard , advanced extension courses, 2-unit english second language offered. students may choose levels of mathematics, senior science, biology, chemistry, physics, modern history, ancient history, business studies, economics, geography, legal studies, french, german, latin, japanese, italian, indonesian (beginners), mandarin, design , technology, textiles , design, food technology, visual arts, music (course 1 , 2), drama , pdhpe.


university entry levels high following completion of stage 6. each year approximately 50% of graduating plc students receive universities admission index (uai) higher 90. in 2006 higher school certificate, plc student received perfect uai score of 100, , in 2007 daily telegraph named plc best-performing independent school in sydney s inner–west.


special education

plc offers unique special education unit catering students mild moderate intellectual disabilities. transition programme developed in 1992 in response decision academic staff provide special-needs stream. through unit, 20 girls between ages of 11 , 18 provided individual curriculum incorporating mainstream classes possible.


senior students focus on board of studies life skills programme. girls spend time residential students in on-campus transition house, learning manage lives independently. transition students run outdoor café gain small business skills.
