in 1973, appointed chief minister of uttar pradesh, populous state in india. however, tenure short , forced resign prime minister indira gandhi in 1975.
parting of ways congress
in 1977, when indira gandhi lifted state emergency , called new elections lok sabha, bahuguna left ruling congress party of indira , formed new group called congress democracy (cfd) jagjivan ram , nandini satpathy.the cfd joined janata alliance contest elections.after victory of janata alliance, bahuguna joined cabinet of janata prime minister morarji desai minister of chemicals , fertilizers. in 1979, became finance minister under short lived ( august - december 1979) charan singh administration. during term, indian economy went last recession of 20th century. real gdp growth fell massive 5.2% in 1979 due global energy crisis.bahuguna withdrew government , joined hands indira gandhi in october 1979
in january 1980 parliamentary elections won garhwal indira gandhi s congress(i) party candidate. but, left party , resigned seat subsequently. won by-election seat in 1982.
1984 lok sabha elections
he contested against congress candidate, amitabh bachchan, in 1984 parliamentary elections allahabad constituency. bachhan won election approximately 1,87,000 votes. later wife kamla bahuguna stood by-elections allahabad.
