while family prepares dinner, guard (george siegmann) barges in , announces escaped lunatic called cat either in house or on grounds. guard tells cecily, s maniac thinks s cat, , tears victims canaries! meanwhile, crosby suspects in family might try harm annabelle , decides inform of successor. before speaks person s name, hairy hand long nails emerges secret passage in bookshelf , pulls him in, terrifying annabelle. when explains happened crosby, family concludes insane.


alone in assigned room, annabelle examines note slipped reveals location of family jewels, fashioned elaborate necklace. follows note s instructions , discovers hiding place, in secret panel above fireplace. retires night, wearing diamond-encrusted necklace , begins toss , turn.


while annabelle sleeps, same mysterious hand emerges wall behind bed , snatches diamonds neck. once again, sanity questioned, harry , annabelle search room, discover hidden passage in wall , in corpse of roger crosby. mammy pleasant leaves call police, while harry searches guard; susan runs away in hysterics , hitches ride milkman (joe murphy). paul , annabelle return room search missing envelope, , discover crosby s body missing. paul vanishes secret passage closes behind him. wandering in hidden passages, paul attacked cat , left dead. regains consciousness in time rescue annabelle. police arrive , arrest cat, charlie wilder in disguise; guard accomplice. wilder person named in second will; hoped drive annabelle insane receive inheritance.
