the ioct test of all-around functional physical fitness administered dpe in historic hayes gymnasium. hayes gym, built in 1910, oldest part of newly renovated arvin cadet physical development center. many current , past graduates , faculty consider ioct 1 of best evaluations of total body fitness given in army. cadets earn a- (2:38 or less males , 3:11 or less females) authorized wear ioct badge on athletic shorts.

the ioct similar obstacle course seen on tv show american gladiators, quarter-mile sprint @ conclusion of course. ioct administered throughout academic year based on dates published dpe. there primary testing dates in both fall , spring semesters; generally, dates dependent upon class year , regiment. cadets take ioct @ different time throughout year because of participation in semester abroad, in-season club or corps squad teams, or injury. large crowds of cadets, tactical officers, , other onlookers gather running of ioct. ioct referenced in articles concerning high intensity human performance, involving obstacle courses. due large amount of available date due lengthy history of course. has been administered, without changes, since 1944.


test sequence

the test consists of 11 events performed sequentially: low crawl under barrier, tire footwork, two-handed vault, 8 horizontal shelf, horizontal bar navigation, hanging tire, balance beam, 8 horizontal wall, 20 horizontal ladder, 16 vertical rope, , 350m sprint carrying 9 lb medicine ball first 120m. because of unique level of athletic skill needed pass test , tremendous level of effort needed excel @ it, ioct holds special place in hearts of west point cadets , graduates. simple search of youtube or google video return many videos it, both serious , comical.
