poland

the first dog tags issued in poland following order of general staff of december 12, 1920. earliest design (dubbed kapala in polish, more called kapsel legitymacyjny - meaning identification cap ) consisted of tin-made 30×50 mm rectangular frame , rectangular cap fitting frame. soldiers details filled in small id card placed inside frame, on inside of frame itself. dog tag similar tags used austro-hungarian army during world war i. in case soldier died, frame left body, while lid returned unit note on death. id card handed on chaplain or rabbi.


in 1928, new type of dog tag proposed gen. bryg. stanisław rouppert, poland s representative @ international red cross. modified , adopted in 1931 under name of nieśmiertelnik wz. 1931 (literally, immortalizer mark 1931). new design consisted of oval piece of metal (ideally steel, in cases aluminum alloy used), 40 50 millimeters. there 2 notches on both sides of tag, 2 rectangular holes in middle allow easier breaking of tag in 2 halves. halves contained same set of data , identical, except upper half had 2 holes string or twine go through. data stamped on dog tag included:

during world war ii, red army did not issue metal dog tags troops. issued small ebony cylinders containing slip of paper soldier s s particulars written on it. these not hold metal dog tags. after world war ii, soviet army used oval metal tags, similar today s dog tags of russian armed forces. each tag contains title ВС СССР (russian for ussr armed forces ) , individual s alphanumeric number.
