two marines 1st battalion, 6th marine regiment in fallujah, iraq, during july 2005


elements of 2nd marine division deployed kuwait in 2003 reinforce 1st marine expeditionary force. these units formed marine expeditionary brigade (meb) , called task force tarawa. task force tarawa crossed iraq on first day of ground war initial task of seizing jalibah airfield in southern iraq. following this, task force pushed north , took part in major battle in town of nasiriyah. after war, these marines moved north al kut provided security , stabilization operations in central iraq.


the 2nd marine division deployed camp fallujah, iraq ii marine expeditionary force (ii mef) headquarters in january 2005 part of operation iraqi freedom iii (oif iii) (later redesignated oif 04-06) relieve 1st marine division in al anbar province. division again deployed year-long tour @ camp fallujah 2007 2008.
