history

acme has been agricultural community; however, 3 attempts develop resorts in area have been inspired gateway position along edge of laurel highlands.


treetops & mountain circles/polymath park

in 1962, architect peter berndtson developed master plan 125-acre (0.51 km) property named treetops & mountain circles. berndtson, original apprentice of frank lloyd wright, designed network of twenty-four private houses, each within 300-foot (91 m) diameter clearing in woods. if completed, clearings , connecting roads have depicted bunch of grapes when viewed sky. 2 homes—those developers harry blum , james balter—were built.


forty-two years later, local homebuilder thomas d. papinchak deconstructed donald c. duncan house in lisle, illinois (a suburb of chicago) , relocated acme property. duncan house designed wright instance of usonian style. in honor of 2 architects, failed development has been renamed polymath park resort. since 2007, 3 houses have been offered overnight accommodations visitors wright s fallingwater , kentuck knob in nearby stewart township.


bear rocks

on november 7, 1965, pittsburgh real-estate developer scott hamilton advertised bear rocks, new mountain ski area , in (now-defunct) pittsburgh press newspaper. development in section of forest known southerwood, along western descent of chestnut ridge, featured on 1000 house lots in wooded setting connected 22 miles of roads. codes prevented cutting of more trees necessary home construction, unconnected buildings, business restrictions, prohibitions on brick , metal siding , similar provisions intended maintain rural character of development. 2 separate lodge buildings built; 1 @ upper entrance development , @ base of ski slopes. @ peak, bear rocks ski area featured 8 slopes , trails double-chair lift , snow-making equipment. advertisement boasted private fishing lake, magnificent swimming pool, rustic cocktail lounge, tennis, horseback riding, social activities, , golf @ private country club nearby.


bear rocks reportedly ceased ski operations after 1973 season. ski lodge , restaurant burned ground few years later , not rebuilt, community lodge remains focal point residents. community continues grow, , new homes have been constructed in clearings of former ski slopes , continue built on vacant lots. while rustic character of development still evident, has suffered in recent years bear rocks codes have been increasingly ignored, including clear-cutting of lots, , logging operations.

following in footsteps of successful bear rocks, smaller resort featuring recreational lake, swimming pond, , wooded house lots, forest lake, developed adjacent eastern edge of bear rocks along bear rocks road. part of sales promotion, red caboose, decayed, placed on 1 of lots. forest lake never enjoyed success of larger neighbor , 5 houses built.
