association of caribbean states

caricom instrumental in formation of association of caribbean states (acs) on 24 july 1994. original idea association came recommendation of west indian commission, established in 1989 caricom heads of state , government. commission advocated both deepening integration process (through caricom single market , economy) , widening through separate regional organization encompassing states in caribbean.

caricom accepted commission s recommendations , opened dialogue other caribbean states, central american states , latin american nations of colombia, venezuela , mexico border caribbean, consultation on proposals of west indian commission.

at october 1993 summit heads of state , government of caricom , presidents of then-group of 3 (colombia, mexico , venezuela) formally decided create association grouping states of caribbean basin. work schedule formation adopted. aim create association in less year, objective achieved formal creation of acs.

in may 2016, caricom s court of original jurisdiction, ccj, signed memorandum of understanding (mou) acp legal association based in guadeloupe recognizing , supporting goals of implementing harmonized business law framework in caribbean through acp legal association s ohadac project.
