History Woonsocket, Rhode Island



before arrival of european settlers in northern rhode island during 17th century, today s woonsocket region inhabited 3 native american tribes—the nipmucs (cowesett), wampanoags, , narragansetts. in 1661, english theologian roger williams purchased area coweset , nipmucks , , in letter referred modern day woonsocket niswosakit .


other possible derivations name include several nipmuc geographic names nearby massachusetts. these include woonksechocksett, worcester county meaning fox country , , wannashowatuckqut, worcester county, meaning @ fork of river . theory states woonsocket derives thunder mist , in reference largest waterfall on blackstone river, lies @ center of city. yet theory proposes city named after woonsocket hill in neighboring north smithfield.


woonsocket falls village founded in 1820s. fortunes expanded industrial revolution took root in nearby pawtucket. blackstone river providing ample water power, region became prime location textile mills. in 1831 edward harris built first textile mill in woonsocket. woonsocket town not established until 1867 when 3 villages in town of cumberland, namely woonsocket falls, social , jenckesville, officially became town of woonsocket. time beginnings of french canadian emigration had been felt.


in 1871, 3 additional industrial villages in smithfield, hamlet, bernon , globe, added town establishing present boundaries. woonsocket incorporated city in 1888.


during great depression local textile industry closed, causing high unemployment. @ point 75 percent of population of french-canadian descent. french-language newspapers published , sold here, , radio programs , movies shown in french. conversations in public in french. city s fortunes revived in world war ii, when became center of fabric manufacturing war effort. in postwar years, woonsocket economy adjusted mix of manufacturing, retail, technology , financial services operations. however, in 1980s woonsocket again plagued high unemployment rates. in 1980 seventy percent of woonsocket s population french-canadian descent.


beginning in 1979, woonsocket became home autumnfest, annual cultural festival takes place on columbus day weekend, @ world war ii veteran s memorial state park. has become 1 of city s popular events.
