the court jester hop-frog, being dwarf , cripple , much-abused fool of unnamed king. king has insatiable sense of humor: seemed live joking . both hop-frog , best friend, dancer trippetta (also small, beautiful , well-proportioned), have been stolen homeland , function slaves. because of physical deformity, prevents him walking upright, king nicknames him hop-frog .


hop-frog reacts severely alcohol, , though king knows this, forces hop-frog consume several goblets full. trippetta begs king stop, instead king, in front of 7 members of cabinet council, strikes , throws goblet of wine face, makes hop-frog grit teeth. powerful men laugh @ expense of 2 servants , ask hop-frog (who becomes sober , cheerful) advice on upcoming masquerade. suggests realistic costumes men: costumes of orangutans chained together. men love idea of scaring guests , agree wear tight-fitting shirts , pants saturated tar , covered flax. in full costume, men chained , led grand saloon of masqueraders after midnight.


as predicted, guests shocked , many believe men real beasts of kind in reality, if not precisely ourang-outangs . many rush doors escape, king had insisted doors locked; keys left hop-frog. amidst chaos, hop-frog attaches chain ceiling chain linked around men in costume. chain pulls them via pulley (presumably trippetta, had arranged room so) far above crowd. hop-frog puts on spectacle guests presume whole matter well-contrived pleasantry . claims can identify culprits looking @ them close. climbs level, grits teeth again, , holds torch close men s faces. catch fire: in less half minute whole 8 ourang-outangs blazing fiercely, amid shrieks of multitude gazed @ them below, horror-stricken, , without power render them slightest assistance . finally, before escaping through sky-light trippetta home country, hop-frog identifies men in costume:



i see distinctly... manner of people these maskers are. great king , 7 privy-councillors—a king not scruple strike defenceless girl, , 7 councillors abet him in outrage. myself, hop-frog, jester—and last jest.
