there has been benedictine abbey in kortenberg since 1222. in 1312, john ii, duke of brabant signed charter of kortenberg in abbey, thereby establishing constition entire duchy of brabant , granting powers precursory democratic institution. after magna carta, second document in western history limit powers of monarchs in favour of number of civil freedoms.


the abbey has stirring history of arson, plundering , reconstruction. oldest still remaining parts gate building gothic spired gate seventeenth century, cattle courtyard (veehof) 1650, lease courtyard, brewery 1732, , abbey castle built 1779 until 1783. traditional great hall , baroque chapel dated 1934. abbey, owned diocese, became protected monument on february 14, 2005 part of resolution made flemish government. old abbey kortenberg center of contemplation. today, grounds have been opened public park recreational use.
