heart-leaf milkweed perennial grows height of 0.3 0.6 m (1 2 ft), dark red-purple flowers hoods elevated above base of corolla. flower structure unusual—it has 5 stamens fused column, 5 circular attachments called hoods , , anther head surrounding large stigma @ flower s center. fruit (photo @ left) follicle many flat seeds have silky hairs disperse in wind. large opposite leaves cordate, or heart-shaped. plant grows in open or shaded woodland, on rocky slopes , in mixed coniferous forest. milkweeds named milky sap exudes plant s stem.
