clean harbors, inc. founded in 1980 in brockton, massachusetts, boston suburb, alan s. mckim, continues company’s ceo , chairman. company had 1 truck , 4 employees transported , disposed of hazardous wastes local businesses. began adding larger corporate accounts , grew 18 employees , $1.5 million in revenues end of second year. in year 3 revenue increased $4.2 million , 34 employees.


clean harbors expanded offer emergency hazardous waste cleaning services , industrial waste disposal, ongoing management of hazardous material sites. revenues continued climb approaching $50 million in 1986.


expansion , diversification

clean harbors held initial public offering (ipo) offering of 1 million shares @ $9 share on nasdaq on november 24, 1987. 6 months later clean harbors stock had risen $9 more $15. company made secondary offering @ higher share price. after 2 tranches alan mckim retained 60 percent ownership of clean harbors. going public set stage expansion. clean harbors, still solely environmental services company, purchased occupational safety , health administration (osha) resource conservation , recovery act (rcra) certified hazardous waste incinerators in arkansas, nebraska, ontario, quebec, texas , utah, continues own , operate day.


during time clean harbors developed emergency response capabilities. first project came in 1984 when removed oil tanker, foundered off cape cod in snowstorm. participated in several cleanup projects in new england , expanded respond emergencies outside of region handling industrial , land-based cleanup , transportation projects.


during time company expanded services industrial , chemical industry sectors. these services focused on collecting, packing , disposing of industrial , research laboratory , production chemicals, many of disposed of through clean harbors expanding network of rcra-certified landfills , incinerators. in 1998, clean harbors industrial services established division handle in-plant cleaning , maintenance services, including chemical cleaning, vacuuming, steam cleaning , hydroblasting of chemical processing equipment.

2008 – safety-kleen solvent recycling division , universal environmental (solvent recycling facilities in chicago , hebron, ohio) gave clean harbors significant position in solvent recycling.
2009 – eveready inc. (industrial maintenance , production, lodging , seismic services oil , gas industry) expanded energy , industrial services , provided major presence in canada.
2011 – peak energy services (oil , gas surface rentals liquid, solid , sludge processing) added new capabilities clean harbors oilfield services.
2012 – safety-kleen (used oil recycling , re-refining, , parts washers) $1.25 billion purchase added small generator market resources , expanded company.
