revolutionary comics
carnal comics created adult comic imprint san diego-based revolutionary comics, in 1991 riding high on popularity of flagship title rock n roll comics. publisher todd loren received comic submission rock ‘n’ roll comics creator lyndal ferguson erotic anthology series called sexpot featuring short, expressionistic (and x-rated) stories. around same time, illustrator named ss crompton submitted sketches in hope of landing assignments revolutionary comics, including drawing of sexy character dubbed demi demoness.
loren, had expanded comic line include non-biographical titles, decided launch adults-only imprint publish ferguson’s comic , 1 featuring full-length adventures of crompton’s demi character. revolutionary contributor allen salyer created third adult title, pineapple perfume, , loren announced 3 comics’ impending publication in other revolutionary titles.
the first 3 carnal comics printed , released @ once, revolutionary’s printer objected perceived “demonic” content in demi demoness , refused work on it. job moved canadian printer (who later earned of revolutionary’s substantial business) , 3 inaugural carnal comics released in 1992.
in 1994, revolutionary being run loren’s father herb shapiro , company’s managing editor jay allen sanford. band kiss working company on three-issue comic series, , around time kiss bassist gene simmons invited several staffers birthday party in los angeles. sanford has reported simmons had once, previously, suggested company “jesus or porn star comics”, , in fact notion of porn star bios had come shortly after todd loren’s death. sanford , editor patrick mccray discussed reviving carnal comics name porn star bios, idea abandoned when became clear making deals stars great challenge , revolutionary comics putting out upwards of half dozen comics per month.
at simmons’ party, numerous porn stars present , apparently notion of carnal comics: true stories of adult film stars took off there. sanford announced revolutionary had signed porn star sarah jane hamilton co-script three-issue series, telling life story. each issue have second fictional story scripted sarah-jane herself, taking place in different time periods , featuring popular british redhead meeting (and getting intimate) various historical figures. sarah jane herself participated in-person promotions hugely attended press party in april 1994 @ golden apple comics, l.a.’s biggest comic shop, appearing @ events glamourcon, erotica l.a. , famed san diego comic convention. second issue, carnal comics: true stories of adult film stars selling in numbers high rock ‘n’ roll comics (which, while in decline along u.s. publishers @ time, still selling around 15,000 20,000 copies per issue).

in summer 1994, revolutionary comics’ publisher herb shapiro decided close company, in part because of debt accrued failed color sports comic line. managing editor jay allen sanford made deal acquire rights carnal title , formed company called re-visionary press publish series. common-law wife heather dawn designed company logo , third porn star carnal comic, sarah-jane hamilton #3, published couple’s home in la mesa, california, before they’d been able set computer or company phone line (the editorial column typeset on typewriter).
from point forward, each month saw release of new carnal comic, each 1 featuring different star (no more multiparts on single woman), , before long company expanded doing several titles per month. company principals sanford , dawn main creators, working wide spectrum of contributors now-defunct revolutionary comics, newcomers, , well-known mainstream creators pat broderick (x-men), kevin breyfogle (batman) , grateful dead album cover painter phil garris.

the first carnal comic carry re-visionary logo tyffany million #1. million had been popular former pro wrestler g.l.o.w. (gorgeous ladies of wrestling) , issue sold well, did subsequent issues released every 30 days.

in late nineties, carnal expanded , began launching additional titles, several per month, such porn star fantasies, superstars of erotica, golden age of triple-x (adaptation of vintage adult films), psychosexual horror series nightingale: mistress of dreams , many others.
many stores , municipalities still considered carnal’s publications obscenity , issues seized police , border officials such. advertising outside adult magazine market challenge, newspapers , magazines rejected carnal ads because of sexual nature of comics, without ever inspecting copies of comics themselves. 1 comic book store, planet comics , science fiction store, in oklahoma city, raided police in september 1995, , copies of carnal comics, verotika, eros comics, , others used in court case caused shop shut down.
re-visionary’s major 1997 project three-issue series called triple-x cinema: cartoon history. scripted jay allen sanford, participating in creation dozens of major figures of erotic film industry including marilyn chambers, bill margold, hyapatia lee, porsche lynn, nina hartley, seka, kay parker , dozens more producers , performers, including elusive gerard damiano, directed original deep throat film.
re-visionary placing adults-only line in places had never been exposed comics before. big boost came joining forces adam & eve, @ time largest mail order catalog of adult merchandise in world. adam & eve had own cable network, provided line real growth. women starred in carnal comics promoting line on spice (the channel owned adam , eve), playboy channel, , tv shows jerry springer show , geraldo, , comics generated positive press in hustler, chic, high society, screw, adult video news, , dozens of other major magazines.
carnal comics spun off comic strip version well. sanford began producing multi-page, full-color version of porn star fantasies various adult magazines, notably oui magazine, 1 of 4 top-selling men s periodicals @ time. heather dawn provided hand-painted colors r-rated versions of carnal’s best x-rated stories. oui s carnal comics ran 2 years , carnal produced similar color strips hustler humor, adult cinema review, new rave, dirty, , others.
publishers in several countries bought exclusive licenses reprint carnal comics, such christos koudakis & associates, has exclusive rights publish 48-page magazine versions of re-visionary’s adults-only line in greece. greek version of carnal comics has covers feature paintings famed movie poster , book cover artist boris vallejo.
around 1999, carnal line gradually shutting down. in 2004 book carnal comics: inside story, publisher sanford said:

in 2001, re-visionary press handed on carnal comics imprint opus graphics, firm set crompton publish titles. though no longer on monthly schedule, carnal comics still produces several titles per year, including fantasy-based comics demi demoness, djustine, calavera, strange bedfellows , occasional biographical comics on stars such jenna jameson, felecia, aurora snow, , tricia devereaux.
