history

after world war ii, heinrich tschuppik discovered 43-page long manuscript of unknown overture-like symphonic movement in c-minor in estate of uncle, rudolf krzyzanowski. manuscript carried inscription rudolf krzyzanowski cop. 1876 on first page, , on last page in large blue letters von anton bruckner (by anton bruckner).

an unknown work anton bruckner?

krzyzanowski pupil of anton bruckner, who, gustav mahler, prepared in 1877 piano transcription of bruckner s third symphony. tschuppik reported finding in schweizerische musikzeitung , in süddeutsche zeitung, prepared clean copy of score , handwritten orchestral parts, , arranged four-stave particello of it. copy of manuscript made storing in Österreichische nationalbibliothek.

tschuppik showed piece experts on bruckner, max auer (de) , franz gräflinger, , conductor volkmar andreae. andreae agreed perform unknown sinfonisches präludium vienna philharmonic. however, performance, had been planned 23 january 1949 did not take place, because nowak, asked expertise, had not been able come final conclusion authorship. premiere performed later munich philharmonic under fritz rieger on 7 september 1949.

shortly afterwards tschuppik died , clean copy, handwritten orchestral parts, , photocopy of 4 stave particello remained stored in archive of munich philharmonic. photocopy of original manuscript remained in nowak s possession , returned Österreichische nationalbibliothek after death in may 1991. nowak had not included symphonisches präludium in bruckner s gesamtausgabe because still doubted authorship.

a youthful work gustav mahler?

tschuppik had given copy of own particello arrangement of präludium gertrud staub-schläpfer in zürich. after studying piece, staub-schläpfer wrote on top of particello: könnte das nicht eine arbeit f. prüfung von gustav mahler sein? krzyzanowski gab den klavierauszug zur dritten symphonie bruckners (2. fassung) heraus mit mahler zusammen. (could perhaps composed gustav mahler examination? krzyzanowski edited piano arrangement of bruckner s third symphony (second version) mahler.) on 7 september 1949, on same day first performance of präludium in munich, gave particello Österreichische nationalbibliothek.

thirty years later, mahler scholar paul banks discovered in Österreichische nationalbibliothek particello annotated staub-schläpfer and, following suggestion, assumed piece indeed 1 of lost works mahler had composed during time @ vienna conservatory. since particello source knew, banks asked albrecht gürsching complement instrumentation. reconstruction first performed berlin radio symphony orchestra under lawrence foster on 15 march 1981 symphonisches präludium gustav mahler . recording of foster s performance , few other not issued performances put in bruckner archive. gürsching orchestration has been recorded neeme järvi in 1992.

the truth?

the truth (?) came light in 1985 when wolfgang hiltl discovered documents stored in archive of munich philharmonic. bought krzyzanowski s original manuscript tschuppik s family , let published doblinger. nevertheless, not became convinced piece originated bruckner , controversial piece remained performed. original orchestration performed first gerhard samuel cincinnati symphony orchestra in march 1997, and, in 2010, baldur brönnimann bbc national orchestra of wales , markus stenz concertgebouw orchestra of amsterdam, respectively. recording of these 3 performances put in bruckner archive.
