Luna Dean Wareham
luna dream pop/indie pop band wareham formed in 1991 after breakup of galaxie 500, stanley demeski , justin harwood (demeski formerly of feelies , harwood formerly of new zealand band chills).
the original lineup expanded addition of guitarist sean eden second album, 1994 s bewitched. lee wall replaced demeski on drums in time 1997 s pup tent, , britta phillips of belltower (also known singing voice of animated character jem) joined when bassist justin harwood departed in 2000. phillips , wareham became romantically involved , married. release records under moniker dean & britta .
in 1992, wareham signed demo deal elektra records a&r vp terry tolkin , recorded number of tracks mercury rev drummer jimmy chambers. of these recordings later released on anesthesia single on tolkin s no.6 records in , mint tea in uk under name dean wareham.
tolkin signed wareham elektra, started pulling band. first contacted justin harwood, whom dean had met while justin playing chills , recruited drummer byron guthrie. trio recorded more demos (produced dave fridmann) , played couple of live dates augmented mercury rev guitarist grasshopper (sean mackowiak). guthrie replaced former feelies drummer stanley demeski , lineup recorded first album lunapark, produced fred maher , released elektra under name luna avoid confusion new-age musician using name luna (later agreement reached allowed band use name luna).
in summer of 1993 band supporting act reformed velvet underground on european tour after set recording second album. bewitched recorded in new york city , co-produced band victor van-vugt. velvet underground guitarist sterling morrison played guitar on 2 tracks. album released in 1994.
luna’s third album, penthouse (1995), named 1 of essential of 1990s rolling stone magazine. penthouse co-produced mario salvati , pat mccarthy in new york, , features guests tom verlaine (television) , laetitia sadier (stereolab). while remaining on elektra records in u.s., band signed beggar s banquet rest of world.
in 1997 lee wall replaced stanley demeski on drums, , band recorded pup tent, fourth album elektra, produced pat mccarthy. in 1998 luna recorded fifth album, days of our nights, produced paul kimble (grant lee buffalo). album released in u.s. on jericho records , on beggar s banquet internationally.
in december 1999 justin harwood retired new zealand, , replaced on bass britta phillips. band released luna live! in 2000 on arena rock label, , signed jetset records, whom recorded 2 more studio albums, romantica (2002), co-produced gene holder (db’s) , dave fridmann (mercury rev), , rendezvous (2004), produced bryce goggin. band announced plans break in 2004, , played final concert @ bowery ballroom in new york city on 28 february 2005.
