in late 18th century, sea-bathing became fashionable in tynemouth east-facing beaches. king edward s bay , tynemouth longsands popular locals , tourists alike.


prior s haven small beach within mouth of tyne, sheltered between priory , spanish battery, pier access on north side. popular victorian bathers , home tynemouth rowing club , local sailing club.

a statue of queen victoria alfred turner, unveiled on 25 october 1902, situated @ edge of village green home war memorials residents of tynemouth lost during second boer war of 1899-1902. designed a.b. plummer, unveiled on 13 october 1903 william brodrick, 8th viscount midleton.


the larger central memorial made of white granite cruciform column rising between 4 struts in contemporary design time. front face has relief sword , wreath carved onto inscription below. other 3 faces hold honour roll lost during both world wars. unveiled in 1923. dm o herlihy named original designer press report stated mr steele designed monument , credited o herlihy preparatory works on village green. 82 names world war ii added in 1999.


maintaining transport links between tynemouth , newcastle tynemouth metro station, opened in 1882 mainline station catering thousands of holiday-makers flocked tynemouth beaches. ornate victorian ironwork canopies have earned grade ii listed status. restored in 2012, , station provides venue weekend flea market , book fairs, craft displays, coffee shops, restaurants, exhibitions , other events.

located on huntington terrace, kings priory school (formerly king s school) co-educational academy on 800 pupils aged between 4 , 18. though founded in jarrow in 1860, school moved present site in tynemouth in 1865 providing private education local boys. school has anglican tradition, admits students of faiths. formerly fee-paying independent school, in 2013 school merged comprehensive priory school become state academy.

this massive stone breakwater extends foot of priory 900 yards (810 metres) out sea, protecting northern flank of mouth of tyne. has broad walkway on top, popular sunday strollers. on lee side lower level rail track, formerly used trains , cranes during construction , maintenance of pier. @ seaward end lighthouse.


the pier s construction took on 40 years (1854–1895). in 1898 original curved design proved inadequate against great storm , centre section destroyed. pier rebuilt in straighter line , completed in 1909. companion pier @ south shields protects southern flank of river mouth.


a lighthouse built on north pier in 1864, when pier had rebuilt new design new lighthouse required. work undertaken trinity house, beginning in 1903; lighthouse finished before pier itself, , first lit on 15 january 1908. remains in use today.


before pier built, lighthouse stood within grounds of tynemouth priory , castle. demolished in 1898-99. stood on site of now-disused coastguard station.


the spanish battery

the headland dominates river mouth , less known freestone point. settlements dating iron age , later have been discovered here. promontory supposedly takes name spanish mercenaries manned guns there in 16th century defend henry viii s fleet. of guns had been removed 1905. popular vantage point watching shipping traffic on tyne.

beyond battery , commanding attention of shipping on tyne giant memorial lord collingwood, nelson s second-in-command @ trafalgar, completed victory after nelson killed. erected in 1845, monument designed john dobson , statue sculpted john graham lough. figure 23 feet (7.0 m) tall , stands on massive base incorporating flight of steps flanked 4 cannons royal sovereign - collingwood s ship @ trafalgar.


the black middens

these rocks in tyne near monument covered @ high water, , 1 rock can seen called priors stone. on centuries have claimed many ships switched off after safely negotiating river entrance. in 1864, middens claimed 5 ships in 3 days many deaths, though wrecks few yards shore. in response meeting held in north shields town hall in december 1864 @ agreed body of men should formed assist coastguard in event of such disasters. led foundation of tynemouth volunteer life brigade.
