the apollo pavilion
the apollo pavilion,designed victor pasmore, completed in 1970. provided focal point sunny blunts estate bridge across water-course. named after apollo moon missions.
from late seventies pavilion became target vandals , anti-social behaviour. original murals on building faded , discourage anti-social behaviour staircases removed in 1980s. in 1996, there failed attempt list pavilion. english heritage described internationally important masterpiece . however, local residents , councillors saw pavilion eyesore , campaigned have demolished. campaign appeared have been successful when demolition proposed in 2000. however, in july 2009, 6-month revamp programme completed @ cost of £400,000. part of revamp original features such murals , stairs reinstated.
in december 2011 english heritage gave pavilion grade-ii* listing.
